the next generation of baby food

If you are a reader of In Sock Monkey Slippers, you know that every Monday is baby/toddler food day and that I am slaving away in the kitchen to provide my family and yours with the most nutritiously pleasing and hopefully organic meals. When Mia came home from the NICU and I really became a mother, the thought of giving her the best was always in my thoughts. When it came time to introduce solids, my head was in a nutrition book and my ear was on the phone with her gastroenterologist. I take feeding her seriously, as you know, and it was to my surprise when I came across this new company that cared just as much as I do. A company that not only takes our children’s health into consideration but our Earth as well.

The brainchild of two women from Austin, Texas that wanted to find the best way to feed their little loved ones, NurturMe is an organic dried fruits and veggies food product that can be mixed with water, formula, or breastmilk! I know, at first it might sound a little strange and different, but here it is in a nutshell:

  1. 100% natural, organic, gluten free, and no preservatives. Just plain fruits or veggies that have been dried and have not been sitting over-cooked in a jar on the shelf for a year or two.
  2. Naturally grown and quick dried for maximum nutrition and superior flavor
  3. Option to rehydrate using your choice of water, formula, or breastmilk. This is an optimal way to control calorie intake for babies with or without special needs.
  4. Super convenient light weight packaging that, by the way, was made with wind energy. Each pouch equals a 2.5 ounce jar of pureed baby food and comes 8 pouches to a box.
  5. Created with the same technique as rice cereals, the typical first food for baby, NurturMe foods can be used as baby’s first food.

before hydration

NurturMe is available in four flavors; crisp apple, plump peas, scrumptious squash, and hearty sweet potatoes. When I was given a sample pack I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was pleased with the convenient size of the pouches and the easy instructions. Combine 2-3 tablespoons of water, formula, or breastmilk with the selected fruit or vegetable and stir. I was also pleased with the vibrant colors of each product and the texture once mixed was very smooth. I did find the peas to be slightly “grainy” but those were Mia’s favorite, so who am I to judge? What about the taste, you ask? Well my exact words were, “It should not taste like that…it shouldn’t be that good!” That is exactly what this processed  jarred baby food hating, only fresh and homemade baby food making mama said.

hearty sweet potatoes

the verdict…

All in all, Mia liked and ate every flavor, especially the peas. I too enjoyed every flavor. I found the sweet potatoes to be surprisingly good and better than fresh sweet potato puree (this was my favorite), the squash and peas to taste exactly like freshly cooked squash and peas, and the apples wonderful but a little on the sweet side (to be expected when you dehydrate something that is already sweet). Now that Mia is onto finger foods I also used NurturMe as a quick and easy alternative to frozen purees in her oatmeal, yogurt, and last night I even used a packet of squash in her marinara. This is perfect for the sneaky moms with picky eaters out there, and you know how I love that! I would recommend NurturMe to use everyday in place of jarred baby food, a backup for those who make their own fresh baby food, and definitely as a stash in the baby bag or for travel (I will definitely be taking this with us on our upcoming Colorado trip)! Please forgive my enthusiasm but I believe this new product to be amazing and I don’t always give stellar reviews. I see a great future for the NurturMe family!

      Thanks for this great review.

With Katie, I made 90% of her food and I expect to do the same with Matthew. But this product looks perfect for traveling! (I always found it to be too much of a pain to tote around food that had to stay cold, so when we were out and about, I relied upon organic, jarred food.)

Do you happen to know if the pouch is BPA free?

Expect to see lots of me here, now that Matthew is trying solids! :)

      • Meredith In Sock Monkey Slippers

Same here. I made and still make purees from fresh organic produce for Mia. But just like you there are times when toting around an ice chest full of puree cubes is not ideal and I resorted to jar food. Yuck. I think that is why I’m so excited about this. It really did taste and look good plus the food isn’t cooked when dried so it retains more nutritional value than even homemade. For my personal preference I will use it for travel and a backup but highly recommend it to those who aren’t as supper cool as us. I’m totally just kidding but really I do recommend it over jars!

As for the BPA, I have emailed your question and will let you know what I hear. I would imagine that they are BPA free because they are not made out of a plastic compound.

I’m really excited that Matthew is eating solids! Congrats again!!!

          Yes. BPA FREE!

And your post made me miss HEB. Oh how I loved Central Market.
            Sigh.

Wow! I make my own, love all of your recipes by the way, but I will try it out as a backup. Because you know there are times when I just don’t feel like cooking.

I admit I am not as cool as all of you that have superwoman capes on in the kitchen. I am a baby food jar user. I can’t believe the color of this product especially the picture of the sweet potato! Where’s the gray food? I live in CA so I don’t know if it is here. If not I’m ordering a years supply. Lol.

Don’t know if i would use this daily but I really like the idea of the packaging. I can see this very useful when we travel or go on day trips.
